Auto Trans problem
Well I just picked up this 88 ranger 2.9l 4X4 and it runs great shifts great, most of the time at least until I got it inspected today. Anyway it will drop in to reverse fine but it will not drop into any foward gear without revving the engine and even then it doesn't always drop in, but as long as it's moving it seems to shift okay. I was wondering if the vacuum modulator could be bad or if the trannys just shot.

It's probably not the modulator. There should be a hose running to the modulator that you can check to make sure it is hooked up. How does the fluid look and is it full? Maybe a filter and fluid change will solve the problem. I have had good luck with a product called Sea Foam in transmissions. Try a can before doing major repairs.
