Hey Guys I'm one of those guys who doesn't give a crap about ac or heat in vehicles but my blower in my truck makes a horrible screeching noise when i turn the heat on and its not even worth putting up with. So I just leave it off but its been getting down to around 15 degrees in the mornings down here and i really could use the heater so does anyone know what could cause this.
The bearings in the fan motor are wearing out - most noticeable in cold weather like that... Easiest thing to do is replace the motor - unless you want to rebuild that one...
I have oiled the motor shaft at the bearings and stopped them from squealing but its getting to the motor that's the problem. Once you get that far it's almost as easy to change out the motor.
got the same problem with my blower motor, mine sounds like some screeching steam train whistle! lol lol
but is there a bearing kit i can buy to repair it? or are the bearings specially pressed in? or ??? just wondering if anyone has ever rebuilt one of these blower motors, and how difficult is it?
never looked up the cost for a new or re-manufactured one, but i figure its not to expensive, but i just wanted to know if it was possibly to easily replace the bearings, if it was, i might think about rebuilding it, and i understand pulling the motor apart is not going to be easier than buying a new or reman one, i just wanted to know if you needed any speical tools, and if there was any headaches like pressed in bearings
also i have a non-AC truck, so i am going to guess removing the blower motor is easy? so if i remember correctly its connected by two bolts, and is sticking out on the passenger side of the fire wall, thus i just disconnect the wires and unbolt it from there and then slide it away from the fire wall, and that is it? or is the blower fan bolted to the blower motor shaft on the inside of the cab?
Mine makes noise too, usually when you fire it up, but it kinda gets quite after it gets up to speed. I guess from setting for over 20 years things dried out, corroded up a bit. Mine is non a/c too. I am thinking without looking the the blower fan is bolted to the blower motor shaft.
Anyone have a word of advise, and or photos would be great. looks like plenty of us have this issue!! Good question Sayer Lane!
I agree it is a good question Harold, i actually was going to ask the same question, but i kept forgetting, so thanks Sayer Lane for asking a good question,
On a non a/c truck this is one of the more simple repairs. 30 minute max time. The blower motor is removable from the pass side of the firewall. Remove the bolts, pull the assembly. Run the blower and note the rotation of the squirrel cage. This is important as the wire harness on the replacement may not be exact and you may need to disguard the wire harness and splice the wires directly. If you wire the replacement motor backwards it will run but you'll not get proper air movement. The squirrel cage is usually held onto the shaft by an allen bolt. Remove and transfer the cage from the old motor to the new. Splice the wires (if needed) and ensure the cage is running in the same direction as the origional. Remount the new motor and enjoy heat once again.
You can pull them apart and grease the shaft to bearing surface, but it will only last for about one season. I have tried it several times, but if the money isn’t tight then I would suggest just getting a new one. If you do decide to try to lube it then disassemble it and clean it really good to get all of the crud off of the shaft. I have tried several types of grease and have found that the good old white grease seems to hold up best.
