Looks great, I have completed mine but not driven it yet, more assembly required. I tried to get some pictures in my reply but no luck but they are in my gallery if you want to look. One concern I have is the extended distance from the front mounts to the transmission mount, now it is back farther and I was wondering if an additional mount would be in order. Seems like alot of weight to be suspended between the two support points and may flex. Anyone have any comments on this.
CTS I went through your gallery. Your back crossmember looks like a good idea. More support can't hurt. I am going to look at options tomorrow. Working from below is a pain in the neck!
Thanks, Pete
Nice job, a little por-15 black and it will real good.
Nice to know someone missed me, I have been in south east Asia for a while, didn't see any old trucks there. I need to post some more pictures, my engine is looking good now that I powder coated the heads red. Had it running last night, few bugs but close. Cabs in the body shop, going to pick up a new box from Pro Picks tomorrow so there is progress with everyone I hope.
I don't know, looks a little flimsy to me ... just kidding! Nice idea with the bolted-up flanges.
There is a fair amount of twist that will put on the stock portion of the crossmember, with the weight of the new c.m. and the weight of 1/2 of the engine + trans offset to the rear. A brace from just under the trans mount to both frame rails would eliminate that. Is it necessary? I guess you'd have to try it without and see. It would likely complicate the exhaust.
Ross, I have been giving thought to a second crossmember as you described. I think I would go that way for sure if I was going with strong engine and a heavy foot but I keep coming back to my mild flathead and old man driving style. I think I will go with what I have and see how it goes. I can always add more support.
Thanks for your input. Pete
Just chimming in, finished the ruff'in of my crossmember today. I'm re-using the section I cut-out and tying everything back together like you all C- channeled style. Pic's tomorrow.
I had my 51 up on my friends two post lift when the cable began to fray after it came off a pully. My truck was stuck in the up position for two weeks before we could get a replacement cable. All is well we have the lift fixed, but it was a scare. Here are some progress pictures.
