what all can i do to my 302 for it to put out more power? it has a 4ddl 'brock 600 headders and 3.5'' pipes dropping out in front of the rear tires. I have a small cam that was given to me its a COMP CAMS 274 XTREME ENERGY HYDRAULIC FLAT TAPPET CAM AND LIFTER KIT FOR SMALL BLOCK FORD 221-302 ENGINES 1963-1995. would this be a good item to add to the motor? and if so about ho much hp will it add? keep in mind that I am installing an early 90's fox mustang tranny. this truck is not for towing anything just for pure pleasure. that being said is this a good cam? Any other suggestions on what i can do for more performance i am currently at 12-14 mpg(this is driving with a heavy foot.) i would like to stay above 9. its not a must just would be nice. thanks.
do you have a part number for that cam?I found some info on the specs of a couple comp cams 302 camshafts.
you don't want too much cam for your intake, carb combo or specially your cylender heads.I don't think anything over a .500 lift is a good idea with stock springs.
another thing you can do to help you with your HP quest is to drop the size of your exhaust,3.5 inch is too big, unless your running over 400hp you don't need anything any bigger then 2.5 inch.just hurting your performance with too much flow on a street engine.
also knowing what kind of gears you are running will help you to decide on a cam.
Not that you are not getting good help here, but if you want more exposure for this topic - post it down in the motors forum. There is one for the 260/289/302/351 and those guys have all sorts of tips on how to build for power.
will i need to get aftermarket springs for this cam? or will the factior ones be fine? I'm looking to pull the motor apart once, so that means no mistakes or B/S issues. If i need new i'd rather buy it now and do it with all at once. also what size tire should i use? im thinking about 16-17'' rims if so would that effect my performance at all?
also what about converting to EFI? would that be a good idea? or waspping the same motor out of the mustang that im getting the tranny from? i can get a motor cheep (around 250 for a junkyard 5.0/4.6) if the swap is better and cheaper how hard would the motor mounts be to install if they are different?
the gears you likely have in your truck would be 2:73,not the best in all around performance,I would say if you were going with the T5 I would say 3:55's or 3:73,somewhere in around that range would be nice.
if you are going to build a complete engine I would go with the mustang engine,I may be a little biased in saying that because I just like them, they come factory with forget pistons, and roller camshafts, very easy to build a cheap little street engine from.
the specs on that cam sound pretty good,if you are going to use your exsisting engine I would at least check the springs at an engine shop to make sure they are within spec.
It would be good to know what intake you have too, just so you can make sure its going to work with your cam,you get the wrong combination there and you will be scratching your head wondering why it won't pull.
