when I go over large curbs or speed bumps there is a loud thud under the driver side floor board .I just did the tie rod about a week ago thinking that was the problem ,it did solve the problem for about a week now the thud is back? Any ideas PS the truck is a 1996 f350 psd
Is it 4 wheel or 2?
On either that could be a ton of different things and no one is more common than the others.
If it's a 4 wheel I'd wonder if it was bottoming out on the bump stops though.
Have someone wiggle the wheel from inside with the engine off while you crawl under to look for movement in the steering linkage.
Then you can jack each wheel up in front and put a pipe of big prybar under each tire to jack them up and down and look at the ball joints. There shouldn't be any movement anywhere.
It's a 4x4 ,uppers and lowers I just did at the same time as tie rod.not sure if it is hitting the bump stops ?but the bumps i am going over arent that big .
I agree with RRanch, it could be several different things. I'd jack up the front and see if you can identify anything that might have some play in it.
The front leafs on are trucks are know to be an issue as they tend to lose strength. Before I put another leaf upfront on my truck, I only have about 1/4 inch play between the leaf and stopper. It wouldn't take a very big bump to have it hit the stopper.
Knowing if it was a 250 or a 350 would be better info.
The TTB would be more likely to bottom out than the 350 dana60 front.
It's probably a cab mount, but you can simulate a cab mount by grabbing the door and picking up and pushing down on it while its open.
You'll hear that thump.
Chances are you just have bad shocks.
If they dont look very new, they probably are bad.
They take a lot of abuse with these heavy motors.
Mine are really loud.
How much room should there be between the leafs and the rubber stopper on the front with the TTB, before you should consider adding a leaf or replacing them?
You don't need to replace springs on the TTB's. Have a good spring shop fix it. The shackles, bushings and bolts all wear and with all those parts wearing on the ttb front end you get some serious tolerance stacking. \
You guys would be amazed what a GOOD spring shop could do for your truck. I mean one that knows what he is talking about. It's cheaper to replace all of the parts I just mentioned than to put one add a leaf on it. It's the proper fix too. These front ends are hell on those parts.
Similar thump in nearly the same place as yours. Rocked the truck and it looks like my bushing is shredded at the top left tracking/sway bar attatchment. What bushings would you guys recommend?
