I was just wondering. Why is a 352 so much faster than a 360? I had a 65' F100 w/ a 352 with 4.10 gears. I used to beat 5.0 mustangs off the line up to about 60mph. Now I have a 70' F250 w/ a 360 (same gears) and it's a dog. I know the 250 is heavier than the 100 but is that the only difference? Just curious.
Did the '65 F100 and the '70 F250 have the same transmissions? In 1970, Ford was starting to worry about emissions, and your 360 may reflect that. Also, the timing on your '70 isn't as aggressive as the '65 352, from the factory. The 360 also probably has a lower compression ratio than your 352. There are many variables to take into account other than weight and gearing.
I figured there was a lot of different variables. I think I had a cruise-o-matic or ford-o-matic or some kind-o-matic. It was a two speed (low & high) when I bought it but the reverse went out on it so I swapped it with some other tranny from the same year which was a three speed ( 1,2,3) which I liked a lot better. What is it with those old trannys anyway? Two different trucks I had the reverse went out on both of them. I never really abused them. Not in reverse anyway!!
You said the timing wasn't as aggressive as the 352. How far can I advance the timing w/o any problems? Or is it kind of a try and see thing? By the way, thanks for the info.
In regards to piston, rods and crank the only difference is that the 352 is a 4" bore and the 360 is a 4.05" bore (same as 390). The crank and rods are the same between them.

Most auto transmissions are inefficient to begin with. Did you know it takes almost 60hp to run a C6?(According to an article in Hot Rod mag) An auto tranny is really just a complex hydraulic system. A manual, on the other hand, uses much less hp. All you have to overcome on the manual is basically. They're much more efficient.
