old fords never die they just suck more gas
Sounds like worn out stuck brushes, hitting it will make it engage because the shock of hitting it causes the brushes to make contact again against the armature just enough to get the thing going.
I do this every time I suspect a starter problem in the field repair work I do for a living.
The customer always looks shocked when it starts up after I tap it.
Seems back yard but I swear if the starter is the problem It works 8 out of ten times.
Also make sure the electric cable is tight on the stud.
I prefer reputible starter shops to parts stores you will get better parts there.
There are some really poor starter drives for fords available for cheap parts house rebuilders to buy.
a few more bucks for a rebuild of your starter is much less head ache than changing a flex plate or ring gear.
And another beauty of ford is that their starters are relatively low cost compared to some other makes.
As far as the bolt goes you may end up using a torch then some vise grips , how about a 6 point wrench or a Snap on Flank Drive wrench. good luck
we tried torch and vise grips, vise grips beating on a 12mm socket, everything what else is there we can do besides straping a quater stick of dinamite to the stater and ending the trucks life
Get a good, sharp cold chisel & a ball pein hammer. Then place the chisel tip on the rim of the bolt head and bang it with the hammer in an angle & direction to unscrew the bolt. This should work, if not, the problem is the bolt is seized to the aluminum trans. case, and, you will have to cut the head off the bolt with a die grinder or Dremmel to finish removing the starter. Once the starter is out the way, now you apply penetrant oil at the source and soak it for several hours or a day if possible. Now carefully use a small pipewrench in order to twist the remaining stud out.
