I have a 1999 E-350 7.3 diesel. When the temp is over 20 degrees or when I use the oil heater it starts well but when the temp drops below 20 and I don’t use the oil heater I can’t get the truck to start with out a jump. I’m assuming that this is not normal where should I look for the problem?
RIght....... check your Glow Plug Relay first. Also a good time to take a wire brush to the battery terminals and clean them really good even if it looks like they don't need it.
Heck, it's so cold here in Georgia I can't believe it ! I don't know how our Brothers and Sisters up North stand it. I've let my 7.3 sit the past few days and have been driving my Jeep. If I have to pull something or go further than 10 miles to town I'll fire up the beast.
Have you checked voltages yet? All of the below applies to an 03 F250, hopefully it's accurate for a 99 E350 as well.
Sounds like the batteries are taking a beating from your cold weather (32* weather in TX stranded me on Christmas Eve with weak batteries).
The PCM won't turn the injectors on if the engine RPM is not fast enough - does it seem like it's turning over slowly or at normal speed?
Also, the glow plug relay should be checked - you should have the same voltage as the batteries on both of the large studs when it's cold and the key is on. This is a large draw on your batteries when it's working.
