I just traded my 82 F-250 for an 89 F-350 7.3, I got the truck as a project but i need a whole lot of help and advice. The truck runs really well and rides nice. The things that need attention right away, the truck does not like to start (i believe its the neutral safety switch) the engine doesn't crank after you warm up the plugs and the batteries are not dead. A buddy said the clutch master cylinder could be the cause because when you hit the clutch, the whole master cylinder moves and he told me if i re fastened it flush to the firewall i would not have that problem. Second gear occasionally grinds and it hardly goes into reverse. Again my buddy thinks its the master cylinder and the clutch is not depressing completely. Interior needs some TLC but thats more my cup of tea. the other major concern is the dually fenders, they're cracked and ugly. any advice opinions etc is greatly appreciated.
There was a fix for the mastercylinder from ford, I have heard that it has been discontinued but you can do it yourself it is just a metal plate that you install on the inside of the firewall to distribute the presure over a larger area. You will have to cut the plate to fit and drill it where the bolts go.
I'm sure it cannot be difficult. I'll get a hold of some 3/16" steel and give it a try. i appreciate the help quite a bit. now with the dually fenders, does anyone have any experience of getting them painted by a shop? mine are in pretty sad shape. one has a 2 foot strait crack in it. would it be cheaper to get it replaced and painted or bondo the current fender and have it painted. thanks for any help
-Jim
the dually fender extensions are very expensive to replace.
if you can save them with a fiberglass mat and resin repair, i would go that route.
and as star and Dave said, your problems with the trans sound like the clutch master moving, not a bad trans.
unfortunately, the repair kit was discontinued by ford years ago.
i pm'd Numberdummy to see if he can help finding a kit.

If you have a manual transmission, you do not have a NSS (Neutral Safety Switch). A NSS is only used with A/T.
And...if you did have an A/T, you would not need the following:
E7TZ15016A92B .. Dash Panel at Clutch Pedal Support Reinforcement Assy / Obsolete
Fits: 1980/91 F100/350, F(Super Duty) & Bronco.
Sorry, no Ford Dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any.
the crack on the fender is a strait crack almost looks like a cut and i think it should be mendable. i ordered a small piece of steel to fix the clutch master. last major concern is the shifter, guy before me broke it off by trying to jam it into reverse. can i have that welded back on? i have a jack handle slammed on to the nub of the shifter right now but that hardly cuts it because as i go down the road it pulls off and thats a PITA
There is something strange here the shifter would bend or break the forks in the tranny before breaking off. Do you have the old shifter I dont see why you cant weld it if need be.
I do belive If a guy breaks one of these shifters clean off I would not let him operate a tricycle of mine.
On a side note the ZF5 spd's have a nasty habit of getting hard to go into low and reverse that is not clutch related but an internal problem, Hope this is not the case in yours.
