Removing my stock front springs I find a wedge type shim on the passenger side but not one on the driver side. I don't see the shim listed in any of the catalogs as original. Anyone have an idea why PO would have put one in? Thanks, Pete
It's not uncommon to use the wedges to adjust the caster angle. But on just one side?!? I don't know. That shouldn't be. They should always be used in matched pairs.
Check the frame for level. Is it the same distance from the floor on both sides? It sounds like some shade tree mechanic trying to make up for the lack of a straight frame. Are there any other strange things about the fitment of the cab? Is the back of the cab parallel with the front of the bed on both sides? Maybe this truck was damaged at some point in an accident?? Or maybe the truck spring is just tired on that side and the PO was trying a cheap fix to raise it a scosh. Good Luck, Jag
Those are castor adjusting shims. The spec will adjust that up to 4 1/2 degrees. When getting the front end aligned, true if everything is set correctly, those should be matched on both sides.
However, if you have a spring that is weak on one side or your axel is twisted ever so slightly, they may have been set to compensate for bent frame or a bad spring. But that would be pretty unusual (by someone who knew what they were doing). I'd be more inclined to say he either lost or broke the one on the drivers side.
Those are getting pretty hard to find in 1 3/4." I just had springs made and they had to build them to incorporate a 4 1/2 degree castor angle as the shims were not available.
I had the same issue with my 51 Panel,..no shim on pass side and on the other side the shim was cracked in two. My entire spring system front and rear was what we call around here a " WHO DONE IT ". The pass side leaf spring pack had only six leafs in it just to name one issue I inherited. Does PO stand for previous owner or ****-er-offer?
