I have an 88' f150, std cab, longbed.. with a 300ci six and a c6 trany. For a while now i have been wanting to convert it into a 4x4. I know its easyer to just find another 4x4 truck, but i really love this truck. My thoghts were to just convert the stock 2x4 ibeams with 4x4 axle beams, and any other linkages and so on. Im trying to get some other opinions on how i should go on with my conversion, like transfer cases, and trans addapters. Also, any other info on the 4x4 conversion topic is well appritiated. Thanks much in advance!
You're in luck my friend because it is a direct bolt in swap on these trucks. I recently converted my 96 F150 to a 4x4 using parts from a donor Bronco and a couple junkard vehicles. You will need to change the tailshaft in your C6 to one from a 4x4 and install the adapter ring to bolt up to the t-case. Either that or acquire a 4wd small block/300 C6 transmission, also a t-case, shifter, and linkage. You will need the 4wd crossmember for a C6, a matching set of axles, driveshafts, and you're pretty much in there. There was ZERO cutting, drilling or welding needed when I did my conversion. I am not sure about your 88 but on my 96 the hole for the 4wd shifter was already punched out, it had a cover plate that had to be removed. It's a very easy conversion, can be done in a weekend.
