I'm taking a 96' 5.8 engine (out of an auto truck) and swaping it into my F-150 (now a 4.9) and I'm going to keep the M5OD for now.
Question is will the 4.9 flywheel detonate the 5.8 from imbalance? Or will it be fine? I know they will interchange but I don't want a broken crank in a week after the swap. So I figured this was the place to ask.
There's no reason that this swap will cause detonation. That is caused by overly advanced ignition timing or too high compression ratio for gasoline used.
It will most likely cause rapid engine damage due to severe imbalance. The 5.8 uses a 28 oz in balance weight in the flywheel or flexplate, whereas the 4.9 uses a zero balance flywheel.
I'm glad I was helpful with your question. Also beware of 302/5.0 flywheels as late model ones (after 1982 or so) are 50 oz-in unbalance so also will result in bad vibrations. Early ones are 28 oz-in.
This is an interesting subject because in flywheel tables the six cylinder units are often left out, which is a bit strange since they are common in trucks and are interchangeable with the small V8 counterparts, other than the imbalance.
Something to keep in mind when considering balancing is that besides the cast in counterweights, the flexplates and flywheels come from the factory with numerous shallow holes drilled in them to fine tune the balance (or little welded on tabs in the case of flexplates). So even the cost conscious OEM thinks that fine balancing is important.
Ok well. I guess I'm going to buy a salvage yard one and make sure they don't pass me a 5.0 flywheel and say "awe it's all the same 5.0 and 5.8".
As far as a clutch I'll have to use the 5.8 flywheel and pressure plate and toss my little 4.9 clutch disc because i'm sure the ZF and the M5OD don't use the same transmission main shaft.
With luck the junkyard flywheel will have a decent clutch disc and pressure plate on it, they usually don't charge extra for those items when you buy the big piece.
The small blocks transmissions use the same input shaft for 300, 302 and 351. The ZF going into my F150 is using the clutch from the original 4-speed.
So your saying that the ZF and the M5OD have the same input shaft spline and diameter? Meaning that I could take a 351/ZF clutch kit and my M5OD input shaft would fit in it ok?

Yes, they should all be 10-spline for the small block stuff.
