I put this question in wrong spot yesterday.I have a 96 Bronco that when I lock in the hubs and do not put it in 4x4 I hear a ratcheting sound from the right front. If I put it in 4x4 it goes away. Also if I put the hubs in free wheeling it stops.I replaced the warn lockout hubs with new ones still the same problem.Any suggestion
i would let this post marinate a bit, im thinking u joint but it could be something else.so may possibilities, you did right with swapping hubs, that will help narrow it down.
I suspect the u-joint also. How about jacking the front up and spin it by hand. You can probubly see/hear better. You might tear that hub back apart and see if all is ok.
Do what Heli said, you might be able to isolate the source of the "ratcheting", if nothing else, try greasing everything to see if the noise goes away (did you grease the hubs when you mounted them?, they need some grease, don't just fill up the thing).
Well I changed the front 2 u joints and it solved the problem. It looked like the original u joints.140000 miles not bad for Ford parts. Thanks for all the help.
