Dana 60?

How can you tell if you have a Dana 60 front axle? Does anybody have any pictures or advice? Thanks

It will be stamped on the axle itself. Year, make and model? This will also help narrow it down.

Dana 60 front axles used king pins instead of ball joints. If there is a plate with 4 nuts on the top and bottom of the steering knuckle where the ball joint would normally be, it's a Dana 60.

The Dana 44HD used king pins as well, until they were replaced with ball joints in '76.

Thanks for all the replies! I was told it is a dana 44 front with 4:10 gears with a dana 60 rear with 4:10 gears. I am building a swamp buggy out of it and I am wondering if a dana 44 front will handle 44 inch tires? Thanks

Your front gears are actually 4.09's if there stock! Lol don't worry it's a 4:10 it comes that way from the factory. 44's on a d 44haha won't last worth a ****. You need a 60! Some say a d44 is good up to 38's...

I agree, 38's is as big as I would go with a D44 if its going to see off road duty. I have seen guys run 44's on a D44 for street and light off road use with no issues but its not going to last for what you are doing.

What kind of susp. kit do you have to get 15" of lift? Or is it something custom? It looks killer

I'm running 6.5" superduty front springs with 4" spring hanger drop in front. Rear is 4" lift springs,4" block with shackle flip and long style chev spring hanger to match. Also a 3" body lift so I guess it's actually about 13.5" lift but who's counting... The pic in my avatar makes it look like
my rear end is alot higher but it's actually maybe bigger by an inch. I don't know why it sits high in the rear on that pic. I think it kinda looks cool though...

Do you have any build threads or mod threads with your upgrades? Curious on the front hanger drop mod. My '77 has a 6" skyjacker lift and 3" body, but there's no way I could fit 44's without doing some major hacking on the body. Time to do some research, thanks!

I dont have anybuild threads but I have some pics of what I've done..

I used a 1/4" wall 4" square tube with a piece of 3/8 6x6 angle to box in the front of the tube from perch to perch. The back of the tube has a steel cap welded on just to clean it up. the angle is nice because I built a 2 point reciever mount into it to install the removeable winch. I then welded a lug made from 3/4 plate on each side to hold a shackle for a 2 or three line pull doubling or tripling my 12000lb winch pull. I also made longer shackles on the back of the springs being 2 or three inches longer to even everything out which is a must as well..
I drilled the blocks and angle to mount in the original holes with longer grade 8 bolts. I decided to weld it all up afterwards just incase. For a tight fit up grind(radius) the top corner of the block to fit the angle tight with no gap

I dont think you will find a D60 that will bolt up to an F150 suspension or a 5 lug pattern. There will be some fab work here.
