Potential Wheel Source

There have been many discussions of which wheels on the bigger trucks are too dangerous for shops to work on and alternatives that may be acceptable. I have a potential source for various types of wheels and I think the price might be right. I am NOT knowledgeable in the area of larger truck wheels and widow makers. I still have to find the right person at the company, but it sounds like they are willing to supply the wheels they have to folks on the forum. I should know by Tuesday or Wednesday of this coming week.

If anyone is willing to follow up with the contact if I find the right person and confirm that they can supply wheels, please let me know. A post here is fine or you can send me a private message (PM). If nobody thinks this is worth the time I will NOT follow up as I do not know enough to make this connection successful. As Clint Eastwood says "A man's GOT to know his limitations."

I haven't mentioned this before but I need your patience with these large fonts. My eyesight makes it very hard to read anything smaller. I guess getting old sucks, but the alternative is worse.

I would of course be interested if the price was reasonable. My suggestion of the right contact person would be truckdog62563 or bobj49f2 as they are among the most knowledgeable on the subject.

Funny thing about the big wheels is everyone seems to whine because they buy the big trucks and find out they have unserviceable wheels but no one seems to want to spend the bucks to get replacements when they become available. I had a set of 19.5 RV wheels with good rubber that I had a hard time selling on this board. I had them reasonable priced and even with shipping they were still a lot cheaper than buying just the reconditioned wheels from places like Stockton and a few other places we have found. Unless your connection sells the new rims dirt cheap I don't think you will have a lot of reaction but you can try.

I agree with Bobj... and,.These big trucks are getting built into F100s all the time,and guys are scrapping them for more money than most (like me) are willing to fork out,to buy them whole.
If you think these could be a cheap enough venture...some might buy them.

I don't think there are really that many people out there looking for non Widow Maker Wheels. even less who want to pay the shipping, but options are good so let us know what happens.

One of my neighbors down the street (ok, Highway 1/2 mile) has a 51 GMC 2 ton? with flatbed dump and when I was talking to him I noticed he had brand new tires on widow maker wheels, I inquired about them and he stated "you just need to know who to talk to" as far as getting new rubber mounted on those killers. No Thanks!!! I'll let the scrapper man have mine when they come off.


Walford I just scrapped a f2 to swap the cab and other parts onto my F6

Ok, I didn't really scrap it- just used what I needed on the F6 and the other parts all went to a good home. Only thing left are the rusty long boards

George - The source wouldn't be Rickson, would it? We went down this path a few years ago with them. I called Dan Richter to discuss it, left a message with his staff, then never got a return call. I wasn't particularly impressed. The whole story is contained in the Group Purchase thread below.

To my understanding the wheel that Rickson was going to produce was their standard 19.5" tubeless wheel machined with our obsolete bolt patterns. Looking at their on-line catalog, that wheel doesn't really match the look of our old wheels. Shortly afterwards I learned that a company called American Wheel Specialist in Pasco, WA, had in stock similar new 19.5" x 6" stud piloted wheels already having our 5 lug x 8" pattern. The cost of these wheels "off the shelf" was comparable to the group purchase price Rickson was estimating. So, to me, the group purchase was no longer necessary. At that point I pulled back and passed off to any of the guys that might want to pursue the idea. Nobody did so.

To me the group purchase idea would have been a PITA to administer. No member could have ensured the participation and follow through of another member that had made a commitment.

So, if your source is able to produce tubeless wheels in the still hard to find 22.5" x 6.75" size with the 5 lug x 8" circle, or 19.5" x 6" with 6 lug x 7.25" circle, it's worth following our noses on. Similar to the above, I'd be averse to making any group purchase commitment. I'll be glad to help in any way I can with technical descriptions, contacts, etc. Stu

I don't want to be mysterious about this, but it wouldn't be a good idea to give the details out until I know what they are. These wheels would not be new and the company is not mentioned on any forum thread I can find - which is what I expected. The price could be very low, but again, I don't know yet so I won't throw numbers around.

Let me see if these folks will work with us first. If someone made wheels for any trucks or other vehicles at any point in the past, and those wheels will fit our trucks and solve the problem, this company will likely have access to them.

George, I know what you mean about getting old. My Dad used to say jokingly, "It's not fun getting old!" And then there is the old PA Dutch saying,"You are too soon oldt, and too late schmart!"

George, some nights the carpal tunnel in my right arm is so bad it keeps me up at night, worst pain I've ever experienced! I limit my typing, so count yourself lucky and I have learned to use my left hand to work the mouse!!

To make pictures and text larger to read for us older folks, here is a tip that my computer savvy teenage son told me: push the control key and then the + key on your keyboad and it will make the website you are looking at bigger. To make it return to normal hit the 0 (zero) key!!!

Yeah, George has my attention too. Used wheels to save cost, a new source to create competition with existing sources, and they have unlimited ability to recreate bolt patterns and variable offsets. Is it too good to be true? Stu

Hmm, not sure how I missed this post, wheel discussions usually draw me in, both reading and commenting. By all means I'm interested if there are 20" 5x8 bolt pattern rims out there. Especially if they are 6.5 or 7" wide. Even if lock ring rims, fine by me.

Yes, by all means let us know what you come up with. And pending distance / location, if I can help haul, move, relocate to save them..... I'll pitch in.
