I'm thinking about putting some lighter oil in my 97. I don't have any starting issues, but I'm starting to worry that these cold starts (even plugged in at -20) at going to effect the engine long term. I don't want to go synthetic so what are you guys running for dino? Brands?
Also, does anyone run a pan heater in conjunction with the block one? It seems to make a lot more sense since we have the Heui system.
IIRC 10w30 for lower temps.
Just curious, why not consider synthetics? Cost?
I have run 0w40 and/or 0w30 in my diesels (VW, John Deere, IH) for years with good results. They roll over fast, which is easier on the starter, oil pressure comes up quickly also and if you have to add a liter it takes less then 20 minutes to pour it in.
The cost always stings though.
Farm I have 10/30 dino in mine this year and it seems to be doing ok.
My block heater cord went out couple weeks ago so I borrowed a pan heater/magnet heater from the shop it worked ok but if your block heater is working fine I wouldn,t even bother.
I did a data stream after my block heater was plugged in for a few hours and my EOT was over 90* so I don't think a pan heater would be worth it. I just switched over to 5w/40 this winter and it dose make a diff. And a really big difference in how it pours compared to 15w/30.
