I have a 61 f-100 it has a 223i6 and a 4spd trans.Previuos owner put higher gears is rear end and still won't go over 60.Is the tranny holding it back? If so what would be a good replacement.
Thanks.
I don't know the rpm I do not have a tach.Previous owner changed gears I can't remember what he said they were. The tires are P235/60/15. Do you know how I can tell what the gear ratio is?
I would reccomend using the gear ratio calculators mentioned above and then re-gearing accordingly if the engine is in good shape. I have a 400M with a C6, and according to the equations, with 35" tires and 3.50 gears, the truck should run close to 200MPH at 5,000RPM (that would be fun to see). Too bad the truck hits and aerodynamic brick wall right around 100MPH. Maybe when i get my 4.11's, 120 will be a possibility. I love the look on the faces of the lowrider owners when a 7' tall truck blows by them on the interstate when they're in a truck that has trouble going over speedbumps. Sorry, had to boast about my bigredtruck
The 4.11 gears will put more of the usefull torque
to the ground and help overcome the wind resistance. It's the same theory as using a cheater bar on a small ratchet. There will be more torque to the wheels to push the truck harder.
BBT, I guess I did get you cornfuzzed, SORRY. I have a problem with this editor going back and forth, sometines it looses what I have put in.
If your truck hits the wall at 80, it has to be the gears. My 352s will run way past that. I suspect that the the way my blue truck runs, it will hit 120 - 130 mph because it has a hell of a lot pedal left at 100 mph. My old red one has a lot left at 90 mph, and it is well worn.

In the still cool hours of the night, you can hear chevys rusting away.
It would help to know what rear gears you now have. Many I6 trucks had 4.11 gears from the factory. If the previos owner installed 3.70s (very common for these trucks), they could still be too steep for comfortable highway cruising. These trucks were built to work, like a truck should be, not to perform much highway duty like todays trucks. You should also check your throttle linkage to see if it is opening up to full throttle. Also check to see if your carb has been equipped with a governer. Many commercial trucks have them to make sure varios drivers didnt abuse the truck. Just some suggestions.
Sorry i made this thread go off topic from the original post. But, right now, in third gear with the 35"s and 3:50's, the truck will idle and be going between 30 and 35MPH, at 40MPH, it is running maybe 1200RPM. This is a guestimate since i don't have a tach on it yet, just listening to the engine.
