I recently bought a '79 bronco, with what the guy said was a swapped in 460. I have my doubts that thats what it is. The exhaust manifolds look like those off a 351/400. Does anyone know of a sure way to tell if its a 460 or a 351/400? Or at least where the casting number is on the block.
There used to be a site that was shared here but it seems to be gone. When it was up, it pointed out that one way to tell which engine family is which is that one family has 7 bolts on each valve cover, and the other 8. Also I think that factory 4V intakes are either non existent or at least rare on the 351M/400. Whereas I think that all 460's had 4V intakes. Maybe someone with either kind of motor could count their valve cover bolts and speak up. I wish the engine family site was still up.

I had a friend buy a 78 2wd F-100. He was told it has a 460, too. Right on the valve cover was a label that said 400. Maybe its just 400's are strong or people think they are 460's especially since motors that large aren't driven by that many people anymore, so they can't distinguish between the varying excessive powers available.

IF you think you have a modified engine here is an easy check.
Look on the front of the engine on the driver's side. Look at where the intake joins the heads near the front if the engine is a modified it will have a M on the intake/head area of the block.
I've seen this on my f250.
If you need a pic let me know
