My belief is the 6.0 is a lot better than its reputation...
I agree, the reputation was partly because folks were abusing these motors by not doing the thing they have to have to live (oil changes, clean fuel, etc) and poor training. CAT went through something like that in the mid-90's when the 3406E (500Hp version) came out; though the problem was in the piston design...part of was in how the techs were trained on them. Either way companies like Tyson Foods swore they'd never own another truck powered by a CAT engine.

There are factory defects like the casting sand left in the block that I regard as unconsciousable shoddyness by Navistar / Ford.
I am willing to forgive them for EGR cooler issues because it was really new technology.
Likewise, the EGR system also caused oil do go bad sooner.
FICM issues... well... I blame Ford for not designing a better FICM dedicated and regulated power supply... and mounting the FICM (and GPCM) out of harms way inside the vehicle.
Then the usual quality issues like wires chafing...etc.. that are not hard to fix once discovered.
Ford is not perfect... but they are a heck of a lot better than Toyota.
Gearloose1 pretty much nailed it. Just turned 117k on an '06. No problems until after 100k Turbo rebuilt, EGR/oil cooler/manifold replaced, and now it looks like the FICM is ready to go. (been tripping the P0611 code on a weekly basis and long cranking starts) I'll try the "fix" mentioned in another thread. Then should be good for another 100k.

I dunno. When it was in last month for the EGR/Oil cooler they refashed with the "latest" flash. I was getting the P0611 code BEFOE that thou. Was'nt flashed for years before that. Might have been the flash from when I bought it new Dec. '05.
41.5k on my 2003 6.0... Just picked up on 12/30 (sold my '99 V10-powered F250 CC SWB). I'm doing a lot of reading and learning right now, and crossing my fingers. I plan to the CCV modification, EGR bypass/delete, coolant filter, and high idle mods soon--as soon as I take care of the oils and filters.
208,000 miles on my 2004 F250 with a July build date. It finally started to blow white smoke so I'm doing a complete rebuild on her. I thought it was just the EGR, but I've found 4 bad valves with all 32 bad valve guides which were all just deteriorated. And yes, the EGR was leaking too. The bottom end looks unbelievably good though. After everything that I'm doing, I plan on getting to 500,000 miles before the next rebuild. Do it right, do it once.

Lot of heavy hauling/towing? Do you think the EGR caused the "white smoke" (presumably a bad head gasket)?
No towing at all. I just got my heads and manifolds back from the machinist and he said "Was this truck running before? Who did the original work on this?" I told him the truck was running great, but started to blow white smoke which obviously raised concern. The motor has never been touched until now. The stems of 4 valves had the finish completely worn off. We both suspect that the motor was pushing oil through. I am actually surprised it didn't let go completely!
The head gaskets looked perfectly fine which was very surprising.
As of last night, I have my heads back with a port and polish and valve job, they look sweet I also got my exhaust and intake manifolds port polished and gasket matched. Everything is going back together starting today!
