I have a 2000 v10 excursion. It has a ticking noice that no one can figure out and I keep getting told to replace engine. Runs fine other than that. Seems to be coming from rear of engine and is worse when I let go of the gas peddle. Any thoughts.
Exhaust leak or a spark plug getting ready to come out of the head--both can make a ticking sound--how loud is it and you told you to replace the engine?? Any trouble codes??
Who is telling you to replace the engine? What is/are the reason(s) they are giving you? How loud is your clicking? How long has it been going on? How loud is it? Have you noticed a drop in gas mileage? Is she throwing the CEL? How many miles on your truck? Any recent mods or accidents?
A lot of questions, I know, but the more you can tell us, the better help these great guys will be able to send your way.
I too seem to have the same problem. I have a 2000 Excursion but the 5.4L. I just got it a few months ago and I thought that I had an exhaust leak or something was wrong with my catalytic converter. I brought it in to a muffler shop and they told me that my cat and exhaust were fine, and in fact, it looked like my catalytic converter was pretty new. I have tried pouring seafoam in every place imaginable, but have had no success in resolving the issue. I have not noticed a decrease in gas mileage, in fact, I'm getting more than I am supposed too. I notice the noise when I accelarate quickly and also when I let off of the gas. So does that sound like I have both problems, the exhaust leak and bad spark plugs???
Hi everyone, Mike here...and this is my first post, so please bear with me. I found this site approximately two months ago, gained and applied an incredible amount of info from many awesome posts by the regular members (Warn Premium hubs, 4x2 hatch pistons, Rancho 9000XL's, ashtray upgrade, in the process of V and B-code springs along with a Helliwig bar, Y-pipe mod, FM 70 series BB2, SCT tuner from Mike at 5-Star, etc.). I too have recently noticed a ticking in the rear right engine compartment area of my V-10. I do have a couple of exhaust manifold nuts that have rusted off, but really does't not sound like an exhaust leak, although when I 1st heard it it would go away after 5mins or so and now it is beginning to show up more consistenly with a warm engine, mainly after shut down and then restarted after 5 minutes or so. I have pulled/regapped/retorqued all spark plugs, thankfully none were found loose. Leaning more toward a possbile hydraulic lash adjuster problem??? Thanks for the space, and thanks again to all FTE members for the previous info/tips. I'm sure I speak for many others, (including lurkers, haha) in saying that I look forward to the many new ideas and suggestions to come!

Thank you everyone to the responses! I'm new to this and it is awesome. I just recently bought the truck from a friend. The excursion has 88,000 miles on it. My friend brought it to ford and they stated it needed a new engine but did not say what is wrong. When I brought it to my mechanic and he also could not find what it is. It is defiantly in the engine and he said coming from the rear of the engine. When you take your foot of the accelerator you hear it the most. I've driven 400 miles since I got it and hasn't gotten worse or better.
Piston slap is common. I have it right now and from everything I read, it is not a driveability issue. It is a big annoyance, but I'm going to run it until it grenades and then buy a used long block.
This link talks about latest they have seen piston slapping happening is 28k miles. With mine it didn't happen untill 85k. Have you seen any that came on that late?
You probably do not need an engine, first bring it to a garage and have them smoke the exhaust and see if there are any leaks where the manifold meets the head.also check for broken studs that hold on your exhaust manifold you can see alot through the wheel well. If that is not the problem check the spark plugs for them poping out. good luck
This ticking sound could very well be a loose torque converter bolt. This is much more common in Chevy's than Fords but can and does happen to both.
I would check the bolts and you may very well be suprised what you find. You may even find on missing.
A loose torque converter bolt can make a noise at idle.
If I were you I would get a good mechanic to look at the truck and get an opinion of what is wrong with it. It could be any of the problems suggested here on this board among many other things.
If the noise is at idle and the truck is in park setting still I would not think it is in the drive train.
Put the truck in park on level ground with the emerancy brake on, like in your driveway and roll up under it and see if you can pinpoint the noise.
Ok so have been doing some more digging on what everyone has said. I looked into the exhaust manifold has a broken bolt with no nut at all. Anybody have experience with this to know if that could be causing my noise? Thanks again for everyone's responses.
