I pulled my buddy's enclosed snowmobile trailer one time and was dumbfounded when he told me how heavy it was.
I'd guess an enclosed car trailer could be 3500# empty. The enclosed ones punch a pretty big hole in the air too, but your Expedition should help to clear alot of that air out of your way.
I treid to find a weight on haulmarks website and it was not easy. I prob could if I took the time to specify a certain model, etc.
The Interceptor gauge will answer many of you concerns. My camper is only 5000 pounds, but 10' high and 8' wide so there's lot of wind resistance. The transmission locks up immediately in all gears. Transmission ship or shifting is what breeds heat in the transmission.
As far as engine coolant is concerned mine never exceeds 200°F, even when towing. I captured the data a couple of years ago pulling the trailer across the PA turnpike.
That's the HD radiator, but the standard ain't gonna run much hotter I expect unless the weights are pushing maximum towing capacity.
If you consider the Interceptor note that the Green LEDs will blind you at night, even on the lowest setting. They're local (and used my truck in their lab to find transmission slip on the 6-speed) and fitted a Red display. Not blinding, but hard to see in daylight on top of the dashboard. They've changed this unit in the past 3 years and there may be a non-blinding color. Maybe Blue.
I have a 2007 with the heavy duty tow package (look for the 7 pin connector), all 07's with the HD tow came with 3.73s, and they are hard to find. I pulled my Mustang to one race this year with the Expedition (normally use my F-150) @ about 7,800 lbs. Never had to turn overdrive off and it has tons of power with the 6 speed & 3V 5.4. I also used my fathers 2010 F-150, 4 door, with tow package and 3.55s to tow to one race and I can say my Expedition will run circles around it - power wise, buit the F-150 with the much longer wheelbase handled the load better. I will say that after driving 2 other '07 and up Expeditions and my fathers '10 truck that I think my Expedition is a freak as far as power - it came here running extremely well and is actualy fun to drive.
Thanks to Chevy24D, I gave the dealer the part numbers and they are looking into what it will take to upgrade the truck to HD Tow. Something I thought of afterward, though - will it affect the warranty to do the upgrade or to exceed the original tow limits of 6000 lbs (even though I upgraded it?)
For the most part they wouldn't. If I break down on the road while towing, it would be hard to hide a trailer attached to my broken down vehicle. I suppose I could unload the Mustang and deny hauling it in the trailer.
I realize it is far fetched.
My real concern was would the mods themselves affect a warranty claim related to hauling.
wish I had something to test out the towing ability of my Expy. I bought this thing expecting a slug...but I have been really surprised at how well it gets up and does its thing

the max Tow rating is based on three things
1. HD Radiator & Tranny Cooler
2. 3.73 gears
3. Class IV hitch
if your vehicle has those three things...well in my eyes you are good to go.
especially if you let Certified Ford Techs do the install of OEM Ford Components.
The maximum towing capacity is identical with the 3.31 and 3.73 axles.
There's no mention I can find that the receiver is different when the towing package is added. There's certainly a different under bumper containing the "RV" connector.
The one I have trying to buy seems to have too large a gap between what I think it is worth and what the dealership thinks he needs for it. I told him thanks anyway, I am looking on.
So I called the guy I bought my Mustang from. 2 hrs from where I live. He is going to a Ford factory sale next week. He already has the list. There is a Black 2009 Limited equipped better than the 2008. The 2009 apparently included standard HD Tow on the Limiteds. Plus it has the 20in wheels, power running boards, sync, second row heated seats, rubber floor mats and an extra year of warranty.
All for (his estimate) 2000 more than the 2008. It is an auction, so if he gets outbid, I may not get the car. I'll give him a price limit. If he can get the car and still make enough money to make it worth his while, he will buy it. If not, I'll wait til the following week.
Brilliant! Good luck with the buy... I think asking a friend to get one from a factory auction is the route I'll take too.
If you are anywhere near Indiana, I'll give you this guys number. He had a list if 7 or 8 reg length Expys. I did not ask him about ELs, but, I am sure they have them.
Only problem is they are all 09/10s. Nothing older than that.
He has a real nice looking 08 reg length Vapor Silver Limited w about 20k miles. I am not buying because it has middle captains chairs. My wife wants 8 passenger seating.
We'd get a 4wd EL... I'll commute with it a bit in the winter time, but usually my wife and I ride together in an awd wagon. My trusty '97 F250 is a bit much to commute in... its an extended cab long bed and usually has a snowplow on in the winter. So, a bit of commuting, but mostly we'll use it for vacations or taking our 3 boys and grandma someplace all in one vehicle. The bigger the better for that stuff.
I've wondered about the HD tow package too. I know my truck can pull anything (460 5-speed with 4.10s) but it sure would be more comfortable for everybody if we could use the Expy instead, so I really liked this thread.
I think I can hook you up with some Pittsburgh people if you see any thing at the Pittsburgh (Butler) Auto Auction. I know Ford does some factory sales there.
Have you found a way into Manheim's website yet? The pre-sale searches can be a real candy store!

Thanks. I may PM you if I dont get something worked out soon.

No, I haven't. Do you have a link or some way I can find it. I will try google.
The website is easy to find... finding a way in is tricky. You'll need a dealer that has access to the website to share their login & password, and it's not a big deal... but they aren't supposed to do that... so it's a little tricky to find a way "in". But I bet you'd really like it!
