Just passed Utah inspection but ABS light is on, brake peddle is very soft, fluids are full. I am looking for advise on probable repair so I can do myself or have a shope do it.
If possible-include estimates of costs.
thanks,
Rich
Most likely your pedal is soft because you have air in your hydraulic lines. A good mechanic or shop can diagnose and give you an estimate for a fluid flush and purge.
The ABS light is on because there is a fault in the ABS system (provided the red BRAKE light is not also on). The most common fault in the 97's ABS system is a bad sensor on the top of the rear differential. Pull it out and check it with an ohmmeter. If it's good, it will be around 1500 ohms. If it's bad, it will read open-circuit (infinite resistance). Replacement sensors are around $20 at the parts store the last time I checked several years ago.
