I rencently did a tranny swap in my 88 Bronco to a 1986 C6 transmission. It has an aftermarket full manual reverse valve body in it(shift pattern PRN123). The tranny ran fine so I decided to take it wheeling and it tested fine. The problem is now whenever I try to shift down to second gear, the whole truck comes to a stop. My RPMs stay the same, but feels liek I'm slamming on the brakes. I called a local tranny and shop and he said it sounded like something binding in the valve body..does anyone know what this could be? I'd appreciate any help, I really don't wanna dump $200 for a new valve body..
Just as a thought, have you checked your second gear servo? if it gets cocked in the bore it wont engage the band properly. It is easy to get to as it is on the right hand side just above the trans pan as long as the exhaust pipe isnt in the way. Though it may readily leak fluid if you take it off without draining the trans first.
Another thing, I called a transmission shop and he said it could be the torque converter, would it locking up be a symptom of a bad converter? He said something about how first and reverse would work because there's not that much torque, but 2nd gear as more torque, so that's why it's locking up.
