Heater Hoses

Two questions:
How do the plastic brackets on the valve cover come of to replace that hold the heater hose over the cover.
Do you have to buy new hoses since the plastic end broke on both when I removed them from the heater core.

The little holder things on the valve cover just pull straight up off the valve cover bolts. A screwdriver might help in prying them up.

What exactly broke when you pulled the hose from the heater core? The hose is just a hose with a pressed on clamp. If you broke the pieces coming off the heater core then you will need to replace the heater core. The hoses are just rubber and can be installed with regular hose clamps.

Heater Core

When I pulled the ends of the hose off the core lines the plastic ends which are crimped on the hoses broke. I guess I can just cut them off and push the hoses on the lines and use a regular clamp.

Yep, that's what I would do. Why did you have to remove them to start with, were they leaking?

Heater Hoses

Naw just got a wild hair and thought since the core had been in since 2002 I would change it to see if the heat would work better. I am changing the glow plugs so I wanted to move the hose out of the way for that so todays the day. I am also changeing the power steering pump which does not seem to be working as well as it used to.

Most of us will just flush the fluid in the power steering reservoir / hydro boost and swap over to synthetic ATF in there to help the steering out a little. Have you tried that first?

I hear ya, so you replaced the H/C due to diminished heating? Have you checked the thermostat? Is the truck not coming up to OP temp? Just wondering.

Heater Hose

At this stage I think I am going to put the pump on even though I did not try the other things first. I already have the new pump and everything is out of the way so I will be a easy change out at this time before I put the rest of the parts back on. The pump I have now still works but has trouble when you are sitting still. Once you are moving it seems to work ok. I am going to keep the truck rather than buying a new one so I don't mind installing the new pump.

Heater Hoses

Truck seems to come to temp. Heater just does not seem to work as well as when it was new. Core change out probaby a waste of time and money but at least is has been easy with help from this site. After reading some other posts I think I am going to add a heater bypass for the summer since I can feel some hot air when I have the vent on and the **** set for cool air and the temp is cool outside. Now that I have said this I guess I need to look at the controls that go from hot to cold also.

Well I'm well aware of H/C's failing... sometimes out of the blue. On my truck, early on, I installed a coolant filter. Even the pictures of the crap that stirs around in there wouldn't do it justice. That was years ago, my coolant always looks BRAND new! The degauss reservoir is spotless, and I believe the heat exchangers (radiator and heater core) are much healthier for it. I also have the 203* T-stat, and can just about melt your toe nails off with the heat in my 10 year old truck. My wife loves it...then hates it, then loves it... (you know, they can't make up their minds whether they want to be hot or cold) And I also put a regular 1/2" valve on the heater hose for summer operation. So I can give you frost bite too..
