strange brake problem

I noticed the other day driving/snow plowing in my 05 f350 drw that the truck is not stopping well at all in slippery conditions.. It seems that the front brakes lock up and slide like crazy, while looking in my mirror the rears are making full rotations like no brakes are being applied.. All tires are fairly new with equal tread, i did front brakes and rotors and one claiper 3 months ago (put on about 2k miles) rear pads 1 year ago (put on about 10k miles ) truck has currently 35k total miles. I did do the fronts myself, I'm no brake expert, did I maybe do something wrong? The rears were thrown on while i was having dealer fix the e brake.. Any help would be great, this is making for very dangerous winter travel.. It seems good in dry weather. Please ask any questions im not the best at explaining this on a computer.. One other werid thing is every once in a while braking and hitting a hard bump i feel like i lose the pedal (abs) for a second..
Thanks
Happy New Year!!!
Chris

Odd you should have ABS. This should, at speeds above 5-10mph, make your wheels NOT lock.

One other weird thing is every once in a while braking and hitting a hard bump i feel like i lose the pedal (abs) for a second..
Does the ABS light come on?

I have not noticed it at speeds above ten mph it mostly when trying to come to a complete stop.

when i loose the pedal while hitting a bump im pretty sure that's been over ten mph.

I have never noticed the light come..

When the ABS come's on,,,like sliding in the snow,,the pedal feels kinda weird and you can feel it pulsating,,hear it also! were you in 2wd or 4x4 ?

In 2wd,,the front will lockup easier in slick conditions(I found this out yesterday) while the rears anti-locks chatter away,,In 4x4 atleast the front and rear are locked together, and it helps braking and turning,,and the fronts wont lock-up as easy,,,unless you really jump on the Binders!,,,I have studded tires too,,,and slid like on wet Ice!

Pretty sure that the issue when you are hitting a bump is just a normal characteristic of the truck. My '03 did this and so does my '06. Your braking and hit a large bump and you feel a flutter in the pedal which is the ABS activating. It is probably due to the truck hopping the bump and taking weight off of the rear end which is light to begin with, this causes the rear wheels to attempt to lock or slow faster than the fronts kicking in the ABS. As far as the front wheels locking up, like cag1980 said at speeds above 5mph they should not lock up although in my experience at very low speeds like in the 5 mph range you can lock the front tires up even with ABS. Even with ABS brakes working properly you can slide on ice or snow because under aggressive braking the wheels actually lock and unlock very rapidly. You are less likely to get that sensation on dry roads or even wet roads as the traction on those surfaces is far superior to snow or ice.

I hope we get some snow tomorrow, and that statement never comes from my lips!!lol.. Im going to do some testing.. The stock tires that came on the truck sucked so bad 4wd was always a must.. Now with the dura grapplers I really dont throw it in 4wd as much, but I never thought that the stopping performance would be better in 4wd.. Never noticed it with my other trucks and been plowing for 10 years.. So maybe ill see tomorrow... Its just the truck was so bad im not hopeful. Any other thoughts?

Just another thought,,on my 06' F-350,,got almost 48k on it now,,,,my front brakes are ready to be done,,,there not sqeaking or grinding,,,,but my front Rotors get so Hot,,in just a few minutes,,,,you cant touch them,,,I am thinking my caliper are basicly froze and clamped to tightly,,,,just touching the Brakes will make them lock-up easy in slick conditions!!

Now I recently did my rear Brakes,,,slides pins were all nice and lubed,,moved well,,,RR cailiper froze up after, compressing the 2 caliper pistons in and replacing pads,,,the RR brake was smoking after just a short drive,,,Replaced Caliper,,,rear brakes stay cool now,,,I am just going to replace the front caliper's too,,,maybe I will pickup a 1-2 mpg,,with out the front brakes dragging so much,,,,Ha,Ha,,wishful thinking!!

PS,,The reason I am going to just replace the front calipers is,,,I did both rear brakes,,,I had to replace 50% of the calipers I removed from the rear,,lol,,,I just wanna do the fronts one time,,and be done!

You said driving/plowing, is it only happening when you are plowing or have your plow on? I noticed my truck will slide more when plowing. Other than that I would make sure everything was clean and lubed and check that the pads and rotors are not heavily glazed over from overheating.

Its seems just about the same with or withouut the plow on.. I did do a little test today because we got a little a couple of inches of snow and it didnt make a difference in 4wd or 2wd.. I also jumped in another one of my trucks to make a comparison in the same area at my shop. I'm sure now that something is not right with this truck..
