I need to rebuild a 400M for my '79 F250 4x4. I am planning on having a camper on sometimes and also pulling my old FJ40 at the same time. I would like advice on building a good reliable pulling 400M. I keep reading about this Hotrod mag article, but is it applicable to towing. My current engine has an Edelbrock intake and carb. Is there anyway this built up engine will meet emissions requirements? I also would like to run regular fuel if possible(cheap).Any input would be great!
In my county of my state, you only have to blow the right kind of fumes out the pipes unless you can't do it after spending a certain amount at a certified mechanic and want a waiver. Then they will look under the hood. Other places I've heard of under hood inspections. In my state the emmissions requirements are related to what year the car was manufactured. As of the new year 75 and older are exempt. The late 70's numbers are easy to achieve with a well tuned motor even if it doesn't have some things such as EGR. The 400, I believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong), has the longest stroke of any Ford V8 (4") with a RV cam it should be a torque monster.
I am in the state of Oregon. They do a load test on the dyno now for older vehicles. I don't think they look under the hood though. The dyno thing is something sort of new here.
cruserguy, i went to our library yesterday and looked through every issue of hotrod magazine they had, except for what was on microfilm and didn't find the article you mentioned.
i saw the article referred to in another post and asked for a copy but didn't get it.
i have a 352m i want to build into a 400 and want to modify the oil system too.
do you know of any high performance pistons for the 400?
There is a tech article on this site that gives a good history of the 400M. It lists interchangeable parts and performance upgrades in it. It lists some piston upgrades also. It states that 351M and 400M pistons are not interchangable. Keep me posted on your progress! I would also like to upgrade my oil pump and would like to know all about what ails the stock setup and how I can improve it. Also, does anyone know at what compression I should build a 400M and still use standard fuel(87 octane)?
I'm currently starting the hotrod rebuild your are talking about. My brother put a rv cam (wolverine) and his gas milage increase to 15 miles to the gallon in a 73 Gran Torino Station Wagon. I would just put a rv cam in it.
