i checked with one those shops that put the plastic coating bed liners in. they told me that they sand the bed before putting in the liner. my bed has some surface rust. i don't see how they could possibly get all the rust out, especially from around the fasteners.
i want to do my box but i want to do it right.
i want to take the bed off, lightly sand blast any rust and residues, and then roll or spray the plastic stuff on it. maybe it should be painted first.
is it possible that i can find a place that will blast the box so that i can prime it and then take it to the bed liner place?
what do you think of this whole idea?
I believe that they lightly sand the finish just to give the liner coating a little tooth to stick to. I doubt that it will take care of the rust issue. I would want to properly prep and prime, then finish the bed before I would put the coating in. Proper prep may or may not include mediablasting; it all depends on the condition of your metal. Perhaps some local paint shops would be willing to look at yur truck and give you some advice on the best course of action.
There are several companies that make a roll-on bedliner that is very similar to the spray in. I did this in my 1993 Ranger. It actually looks very good. Not as good as the spray in perhaps but it cost me $150.00 instead of $400.00. The one I used was called Durabak from a company called Cote-L. They make it in a number of colors. It sees light to moderate use and I am very happy with it. They also recommend you sand the bed lightly, just to rough up the bed to give the liner a grip.
