Hey guys, my '73 F250 stranded me on the freeway today. I bought the truck about a month ago and I think I ran out of gas today.
Anybody know the mid tank capacity? My service manuals list either 22.5 or 20.2 gal. depending if it is a CA truck or 49 state.
My guage isn't working for the "AUX" tank, but does register for the rear or "main" tank. I know because I've been sucking off the tank that isn't registering....so guessing my fuel level has been a F'ing challenge. I've tried a couple of times to switch to the rear tank, but the truck dies. The rear tank is full... It's odd. I switched the tank to the rear a couple of times and it has died. This evening I tried the same thing and it died again. I switch to the other tank and it started right back up. I switched it back to the rear tank and it kept running. Is there something odd, like more effort for a weak fuel pump to pull from the rear tank?
Sorry for the long winded post. I know I need to start looking into my sending unit on the forward tank, but the selector valve not working is baffling me.
Don't know how big your tank is ( still don't know how big my tank is either )
I just fixed this problem on my rig
In my case the float was cracked, and i had a bad ground wire from the switch to ground that had no continuity.
I just ran a new 14 guage ground wire directly to the battery ground post from the ground wire at the sender to make sure it worked since i have no rear tank yet.
Just bought my truck too and my lines were all cracked and i still had an original ford gas sender in my tank.
Unteachable huh? There are rubber conecting hoses from the steel lines running back to the main tank. If there was a crack in that rubber hose and you had the selector in that position, the fuel pump would be sucking air into the fuel line stopping any flow. But when he switches back to the mid tank he could have a sealed path and the fuel pump would pick it right up again in just s few turns of the crank and fill the carb bowl. Any way It's worth looking at wouldn't you think? When I got mine I had to replace many of the original rubber lines. fuel, brake, vac. Why waste time asking a question if you treat good natured suggestions like that. It's not like I can see your truck.
Sorry for flying of the handle. I appreciate your good nature intentions. Your longer explanation make more sense about deteriorating rubber lines.
Thanks for the suggestion to check them.
Yeah mine were nasty. Real bad right around the selector, steel to fuel pump and steel to rear tank. It seems like there was an expansion joint about half way to the rear tank that was all cracked up to. Good luck with it.
Peace....
