I have an 02 F550, 4x4, 6 spd, crew cab with 150k. I have added a cold air kit, wicked wheel, 4" straight pipe, and a TS performance programmer. I know the truck is very low geared and top speed is 70mph, but I noticed the other day it felt doggy when I was hauling another truck. By doggy, I mean I had to downshift on a hill and it did not top the hill like I wanted it to. I'm a farm boy and usually haul heavy loads (10k+). My question is, am I running a wrong combo somewhere or do I need to change something else (bigger injectors, turbo, etc). This is my first PSD, so I don't know what to expect. An insight is appreciated.
Some have said TS programs aren't as good as others, but I have no direct experience. I can tell you That Tony Wildman will fill your chip with some EXCELLENT tunes for $150. And they're worth it, IMHO. You could benefit from some turbo work, a van turbo or 1.0 exh housing. That will allow you to run hotter tunes while keeping your EGTs lower. Going with singles will also help you get a nice bump in power and efficiency. Stage 1s with a van turbo will give you a real 50-60 RWHP increase and you'll be able to pull those heavy loads with no problems. That's what I'd do if I were in your shoes...
Welcome to FTE. I'd say a lot will depend on the load and the hill. What settings do you have on your TS chip? You might want to get it re-burned with some better tunes, but before we get into that, do you have a set of gauges? You really need to be watching the exhaust gas temps while towing.
Alot of people are running the same combo, just maybe with a DP tuner. The TS is a good chip though. Alot of guys run the WW also. Do you have gauges? maybe your getting a boost leak somewhere. Try looking on the up pipes, rub your fingers around and see if they turn black. Make sure all your IC tubes are tight also. How old is the oil and fuel filter? Just a few paces to start at..
Jeremy brings up a good point. If this sluggishness is new, check for boost leaks. Gauges are worth their weight in gold for diagnosing a lot of issues like this.
