things to do to get better mileage?

There's also some sorta OD that goes in the drive train AFTER the tranfer. For my rig in was called Rancho Overdrive. It weighed almost as much as the trani. Weird lookin thing. Shape of a short roll of coins (but much bigger, of course). Almost bought 1 but it was on the Left coast, heavy and 250 $. Seemed ideal.

I have an OD in my GMC, Spicer 5831. Cost about 500 plus the fab work and such. I like it, but also like the fact the thing also has an underdrive (which is more of what I wanted it for) but the OD also does help some. As I said earlier, I do not know realistically how long it will take me to actually make back the money in gas savings.

So is it a similar mod? after the T/T, Hung between the frame rails, ('fab work') shorten the drive shaft? A spicer that has 1 stick (up thru the FBoards) with 2, 3 positions?

There is a thread about them
could you direct me there, bghnkinf250? I think this is of the same era but a different animal. You're using the same trani gear selector, and have UD as well. Am I right, also it has a shaft to the transfer w/o a direct connect to the rear DS/chunk?
Again, thanks for the clarification n link.

Here is the link, https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...ie-thread.html. You can also check out 6066.com, site about 60 to 66 GMCs but has a lot of info on the Brownies.

Replace the 460 with a 300-Inline six... would increae the mileage to between 10 and 15.
Not much else except a engine swap is going to improve mileage,
Do a tune up, tire alighnment, good working shocks, tire properly inflated, lightly press the gas pedal, etc...
The 460 that was transplanted into the 1981 F-350 the county road department had, got between 5 and 6 as well. And it had an additional fuel tank in the bed. Was used as a Plow truck...

If it was a F-100 or F-150, it would be between 15 and 20.
My 1981 F-150 T-18 2.75 gears, gets between 19 and 24 mpg.
