hey guys. y'all prolly don't know me, cause i am never in this forum. i drive a ford truck, but it's an f250. my friend, however, has a late '90s or early 2000's ranger. not sure what motor, dont really know anything about it. not sure if it is four or six cylinder, nothing. i have only ridden in the thing a couple of times. Anyhoo, this friend of mine lives about 45 minutes away, and we got together over the weekend to hang out. it had snowed here that night, and the roads were bad when he left. he put it in 4wd when he left to get out of my driveway, and since the roads were bad, he left it in 4wd. the problem is that he left it in 4wd all the way back to his house at speeds of 55+. Since i was not with him, i don't know if he had it in lo or high, but he def. should not have had it the whole way home in 4wd on dry roads. he said when he got home it won't come out of 4wd now. he has an electric system, and he had a "dial" on the dash w/ 2wd, 4wd high, 4wd lo. wondering why it won't come out of 4wd. electrical malfunction or drivetrain binding?
i just talked to my buddy, it's a '99 ranger. four cylinder. there is a dial on the dash that you turn to the left once to select 4w High, twice for 4wL.
Should not be drivetrain ....while I do have manual hubs not the stock auto I may have driven a ways in 4 hi at 55mph speeds BUT it was slippery as a goose's guts out. Probably the shift motor being retarded.
how hard is the shift motor to fix/replace? where is it located? near the transfer case? do you think it would be more likely an electrical problem with the shift motor, or a mechanical problem with the actual shifting mechanism itself?
also, how would you go about detecting drive train bindage? i was thinking jack up the front of the truck to relieve tension, then see if it would shift back into 2wd. if that didn't work, then check the shift motor. are there tests i can do with a multi-meter?
thanks. i am worried about the shafts actually flexing inwards and destroying seals, etc. that would require removal of transfer case, tranny, etc. just to replace rubber parts. anyone know where the shifter motor is located?
