Your neighbors lol. Actually it depends on where you are. Colarado for instance requires mufflers if you have a jake even if it is inoperable.
If you do not have a turbo they are pretty much unbearable without a muffler.
I was just thinking because of another post mentioning running exhaust out the hood pulling style ... Eight 1 1/2 inch pipes rising out of the hood would make an interesting pic ... As long as the tuning was good there should not be much of a smoke problem ... Don't think you could do it with a turbo tho ... Have to be NA ...
I probably should check with department of licensing first ... Or I could just bolt the engine to the rearend on a little subframe and stick some forks on the front end ... Motorcycle rules are a bit more lenient ...
A 6.9 trike with 8 vertical shorty pipes for exhaust ... Hmmmmmmmmmmmm ... Probably get a lot better fuel mileage ... And I would still have the ponies to tow a travel trailer ...
What kind of wheel you going to put on that beast, when I said straight pipes on an na were unbearable I was talking about exiting in the rear, ear plugs wouldn't even make that bearable.
Utah law states that you must have a muffler OR a noise reducing device in operation at all times. A turbo with straight pipes is quieter than a turbo with many of the free flowing mufflers and glass packs.
The idiots in the state office claim that the noise reducing device means "muffler". Even standing in front of them with the inspection book in hand, clearly showing 2 separate entries of "muffler" OR "noise reducing device", they state that it means MUFFLER. Makes me want to pull out what little hair I have left.
I have no idea on muffler laws here in Ia. I think as long as it's not ungodly loud (although there are trucks like that running around) they don't really care.
I ran my 7.3 straight piped for a few months, at times it was annoying, other times I loved the cackle. My pipe exited right behind the cab, underneath. If it had a full exhaust with a tailpipe, I don't think it'd be bad at all. But I finally got tired of the noise and stuck a glasspack on it for now...until I can come up with a functional tailpipe
