i need noobie help!!

ok i am kinda new to the diesel word. and to say the least i really dont know what to look for. i have been turnin wrenches for years now, but only on gas engines and dont really have a clue on a diesel. so really any help would be greatly appreciated. i have seen every thing beating around the bush about it, but i may not be looking in the right places. i really just want to know WHAT to look for on my truck ie:leaky injectors, hpop problems/upgrades,any common fuel system i need to look for. it seems to run well and drive well other than worn out front end parts. there is an oil leak on top of the driverside valve sover that im not sure what it is. other than that i was just wondering if any one could either piont me in the right direction of where to look or just tell me what to look for as i am kinda scared to start tearing in to my daily driver when it aint really broke. . oh and its a 97 f250 crew short bed 4wd w/281,xxx miles on it. thanks in advance

Generally you build things from the bottom up. I do. Drivetrain, suspension, brakes, fluids, bearings, and steering to start. Cooling and heating system. Fuel delivery and such. I do my best to make sure the basics are taken care of before starting mods. I'm not one for waiting on something to fail. Gotta try to catch issues before they happen.

Oil pan would be the last thing I would want to replace. Keep looking for that leak. Sorry Jaaaackman.

ok i have one oil leak on the driverside valve cover where the pcv tube is at i think. it goes from the intake tube in to this rectangle box lookin thing over there. any one know what this is and how to fix it? also i tried the shiming of the fpr thing but i am not sure of how to read my fuel pressure. i put my guage on it and started bouncing from 0psi to around 50psi. on a gaser it usually stays steady. not sure if this is normal. also after i shimmed the spring it bounces fron about 5psi to around 90psi. what would this hurt? it is back to stock for now. thanks for any help.

The box you are describing is the mesh/metal filter that the crankcase vents to. It's simply a breather that bleeds off the crankcase pressure. There is two o-rings under this box you need to replace if your seeing oil between the "box" and valve cover. Make sure you get ones rated for oil/high temperature as I don't believe the stock ones are...

What kind of gauge are you checking your fuel pressure with? A tire pressure gauge will bounce pretty good and is sometimes difficult to pinpoint what your fuel pressure is. Your number sound about right for shimming the FPR.

I used a stick style tire gauge. You really don't want it to read above 80psi as a rule of thumb but I have heard of some running a bit more.

X2 on the o-rings.

WELCOME TO FTE!!!!

X3 on o-rings.

What are you using to shim your FPR?? all the ones we have done all might start in the 40-50psi range, but after we shim them they only come up to around 65-70psi. never seen one jump from 50 stock to 90 shimmed.

thanks on the 0-rings. does any one know about waht size the o-rings are?ill have to try replacing those when ever i can get all the ice off the truck and open the hood.lol but i used a .177 bee bee. that what i red that some peaple used so i tried and got scared and took it back out. and the guage i was using is a mac tools guage with the ford adapter. it took a little wigglin but i got it on there. and the highest that i saw it bounce was around 95 psi and it was steady around 85-90 psi.

That seems high to me, IMO. Do you have a Cali model?...if you do, I heard you shouldn't do the shim b/c you will be changing the fuel soon pump, apparently the Cali model is already at a higher PSI...and Cali models are a PITA.

it is not the cali model i am pretty sure of it. at least i idint see the ufo thing by the filteror any where on top of the engine. is the guage supposed to bounce like that if you dont have the one way guage that sticks. could i just streach the spring a little at a time until its whare i want it? or would that cause the spring to get weak and maybe break?
