disconnect heater cord and wait a minimum of 1 minute before starting engine. That is what is says on the tag of the new block heater cord I just got. What the is that all about. Never heard of waiting after unplugging. Any one know why they would say that?

Seems that they think that the element can croak if its still hot and there is vibrations

Don't have a clue .. if I had to guess probably something about allowing the coolant temperature to equalize a bit around the heater probe so it cools down. Like throwing cold water on a hot object.

Hell, I start mine with it plugged in!

I've even left it plugged in while it was warming up if i had not had it plugged in long to help with oil warm up.

I had it plugged in long enough the other day though that it melted all the snow off the hood and the window started to melt as well.

=)

I havent heard that in years,... but they used to say that on semi tractors too. the effect was just like stated above that there would be a pocket of extremely hot water around the element and as the pump started moving water the cold water on the other side of the block could hit the still hot element and short it out like water on a lightbulb. I went through several block heaters that way, the new ones supposed to have a coating ceramic I think to help protect against this. They used to say wait at least 5 minutes but again I havent seen that warning in years even in the owners manuals for these trucks. However I normally unplug it and then get in to start it so it sits about 30 seconds before I start mine.
