temp gauge

I have a 1987 F150 300ci I6 4x4. The temp gauge will move only slightly when the engine is warm or hot. I checked the sending unit according to the Chilton manual and it checks ok. When I pulled the connector off my son said the gauge went up slightly, only about 1/4 of it's C to H range. I then grounded the positive wire with the key off and with the key on engine off. Both ways the gauge did not move above the 1/4 position.
Is there any other test I need to do before I conclude that the gauge is bad?

temp gauge

Sorry for the confusion. I meant the Cold to Hot range. The Cold being on the left side of the scale and the Hot being on the right side.

Make sure you are working with the one wire sensor, if it has two wires you have the wrong one.
