I just bought a 78 f250 supercab about a month ago and had my first issue. While driving home yesterday I got pulled over for no tail lights. and to make a long story short I found out that my side markers are flickering, no tail lights ( but do have brake lights when applied) and the head lights keep dimming. I went to auto zone and bought a new headlight switch because mine was making a crackeling sound. just before i installed the new switch I turned the lights on and all lights worked properly. I started driving to lowes about an hour ago and saw the lights on the heating instrument panel flickering so turned around and drove back. I put the new switch in but all symptoms are still there. Does anyone have a good place to start? I'm a knowledgable mechanic with the exception of electrical issues, probably a loose wire or two in my head too.
This is most likely a grounding issue, check and clean all your grounds, specifically on the voltage regulator where it mounts to the inner fender or core support, also check the dimmer switch they can get pretty corroded due to their location on the floor and cause a short.
I second Montana Highboy. The intermittent nature sure sounds like a ground issue. Dimmer switches are cheap. When they go out, strange things can happen. Always good to keep one around the shop.
