I noticed that the engine in my 66 F-100 (352 FE) is installed about two inches to the right of center. Without this "adjustment the exhaust manifold would not clear the steering gear box. Is this the reason the RR axle is shorter than the left? What's up with this?

This ? came up on the mailing list last year...one theory was that the engine is off-center as a counter balance for the driver's weight. Makes sense until you add in the passenger component to the equation.
Stockman I thought of that plus that 60 lb steering gearbox and my lead foot. Were these engines installed by FOMOCO this way or was this a "adjustment" by the mechanic that installed this engine. I don't know if my truck was an original V8.

PS. Thanks for the part numbers on the vibration damper!
If you have ever had the tranny cross member out you will see that the bolt which secures the mount is off-set to the one side by about 2-3 inches. (your welcome on the pn)
I have logged a fair amount of time both driving and riding in both Chevy and Ford vans. The "doghouse" is off-center cheating the pasenger foot room in every van I've been in.
Here's my .02 cents worth. If that engine is not moved to the passenger side, the exhaust dampener butterfly valve gets closed by the Steering gear box while under a long pull. How could a company as large as Ford, with as many engineer's on the job as they must have, miss something that easy? If they did, it was one of the guy's in assembly that came up with the fix, and Ford bought it.
Anybody else got a better one?
I always thought this was to counter the added weight that some have on the drivers side, A/C, steering box, brake system, clutch system and on 4x4's, the case and shaft are on the drivers side. Some also carry fuel on the drivers side. Had mine checked with DOT portable scales under each wheel, the front had more on it than the back, but, the left to right was almost even, the drivers side was just a little more(battery in box behind pass. maybe?), the rear were the pinion enters is also on the pass. side of the diff, this offset would help with driveline angles also, for whats it's worth! Chuck P has the best guess so far. Evrything but the Air conditioning is on the Drivers side. I had an F250 once that had a tool box on the passenger side, but it was plastic and didn't hold much more that a lunch box. Weight wise, it wouldnt offset a drivers dinner. Now there's 2&1/2 cents worth...
