I have an extra connection on my radiator (Stock FORD aluminum single row radiator for 1985 F150 with 5.0 engine) that has a vacuum plug with a worm clamp on it. It is located right where the radiator cap is, right UNDER where the hose connects to the radiator overflow reservoir. What was/is this extra connection for?
My '89 4.9 used that port. The smaller hose went to a metal adapter tee to tie it into one of the heater hoses. I noticed this because the tee started leaking. I capped off the radiator and ran a regular heater hose. About three years later I ran across a good OEM tee'd hose and put it back original (just because). But I never did figure out what the smaller hose was for. I drove the truck daily for about 6 years and never noticed any difference in heating or cooling with or without the extra hose.
I just installed an Autolite 4100 carburetor (hot air choke) on my truck last year, and it has a metal bracket and cradle attached to the choke side where a heater hose is supposed to rest against the choke cap, to help warm the automatic choke spring. Could I run a coolant hose from this extra radiator port, over to the choke cradle, and T it back into the heater hose to help get heat to the choke?
OK, thanks guys. When I said stock, I should have clarified that I bought this radiator last year from Ford as a replacement. It is exactly what came on my truck originally, aside from the extra port.
