Semi new guy here. I'm getting the flashing O/D light on my Early 99 F-250 4X4 CC 7.3. ABS is ok, speedo works fine, no other apparent problems. In searching the threads most indicate the VSS is bad. But in reading further I'm starting to wonder if there is something else amiss. Yesterday after work (fairly cold here in Utah, upper 20's low 30's afternoon high) I go to start up, turn the key, dash lights up normal, Glow Plugs work, turn the key.. nothing. This happened 3-4 times before it starts up. Runs normally from there. Got home, plugged in for the night. Come out this morning, temps hovering around 0, starts up and runs normal. I'm thinking of taking it in to get codes read, since I don't have a reader. Any other suggestions?
Do you have an auto trans? Have you been towing lately ? Could be your trans.. You could try replacing the VSS on the rear end.. Napa p/n 530780... around $11.. (check the connections and wiring at the sensors 1st, maybe a rock hit it)
But, yes get your code read..
Also I would check your battery connections.. might explain your nothing ignition..
Auto trans yes. Towing? I haven't towed anything for a couple months, and that was a small trailer (less than 1000 lbs loaded). I've had it in 4WD a couple times to climb snow covered hills, but nothing extreme. I'll give the VSS a check before I buy a replacement as well as checking battery connections for the no-start situation.
Either get the codes read or start buying parts and installing until you get there. Getting the codes read is almost always cheaper than randomly replacing parts hoping to stumble over the right part.
I will be getting the codes read before I buy anything. Makes $en$ne. As far as checking the connection and cleaning the VSS, that would be the first step. Just wanted opinions.
i had the O/D light flashing and my truck not starting and some other things were also acting up as well. my problem was a loose connection on the drivers side battery.
