Rebuilding a 6C

My transmission in my 79 Bronco won't go in to reverse. It has had problems for a while. So I am looking at rebuild it myself.
It is a C6. Has anyone rebuilt a C6? How tough was it? What manual would you recommend? How long did it take? Would you do it again?
I know almost nothing about a automatic transmission so any advise will be appreciated.

Thankyou

i too was going to rebuild my c6 on my own, but then i decided to have it done professionally. there is a guy near me that does a basic rebuild for about $200 plus clutches. he is good when he got into mine he found out that all i really needed was a valve body. (wrong one for the trans) (rebuilt by someone else) i suggest you take it to a professional mine was done in 2 days. and runs perfect. i dont know where you are from but if you are near WI contact me and i will et you his #

my c6 isn't working right either. i can get by though.
i plan to rebuild mine because i've always wanted to get into an automatic transmission and maybe i can a couple of dollars.
i've read on this board of others doing it and they say it isn't hard. they used one of the off the shelf transmission books, (i forgot the name-haynes i think). they also said no special tools are needed. i've also heard you need a special clamp to hold the clutches together before you take them out. i heard you can rent them from a rental place. i figure i can try and if i get in too deep, i'll put it in a box and take it to the shop.
good luck and keep us posted. i'm interested to know how it turns out.

I'm an equipment mechanic and I just did mine in my 70 f250 I had never rebuilt an automatic trans mission in a truck before.
I went to the library and copied the overhaul section out of a Motor auto trans manual.
Find your ID tag number it could help you to get the right info and the right year book.
Just take it slow easy you can handle it.
The only thing that needed a special tool was for installation of the forward reverse clutch springs retaining snap ring . You might be able to borrow one from a trans shop (especially if you buy some parts from them)the rest is easy enough.
Mine works perfect now and I like the shift correction kit too I set it up for towing.
Of course working on any kind of machine or vehicle is what I do for a living so I would have to say that if you can not handle say for instance a carb rebuild you probably should take it to a shop.
