I am getting ready to rebuild a '73 400M. I've noticed that Edelbrock doesn't make a Performer RPM intake for the 400M. They make the Performer series, but I'm interested in the Performer RPM specs.. Does anyone know of a factory or aftermarket aluminum dual-plane intake for the 400M? Also, what may the 2V heads require to reach at least a 400HP flow. This engine will end up in an '88 Thunderbird. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
One the dual plane intake i am going to use is the Weiand action it is good through 6000rpm they say
the 2V heads 3 angle valve job with a bowl clean up get rid of the multi groove valve stem locks with single groove. Have the heads planed to flat for more comperssion. Another way for more comprssion i have heard of is use 351C flat top pistons.
I just finished installing a 400M in my 79 F-150. I used a new Eldebrock Performer intake and 650 Holley double pumper carb. I had the egine work done at a local speed shop. We installed Cleveland 4V valves in the stock heads with port matching and bowl work. They flowed the cylinders and had 230 cfm on the intakes at 500 lift. I also had them milled .035, the block was decked and straightened with flat top pistons it made 9.7 to 1 compression ratio. Refer to Sept. 98 issue of Hot Rod magazine for 400M build up.
I opted for the performer myself. You wont see 6000+ on the 400, so the single plane is just hype for the BB's,The performer package for the 400 makes a real stump puller, just the intake and a carter650 with 2.5 headers made tremendous torque, just dropped a cam 204/214 484/510 and had the rod bearings changed, now oil pressure at idle is way plenty, although they are not broke in yet, so check with me later to see how the motor performs, this site is cool, my first time here anyone e me to talk about the 400 or 351M to seanwb@tisd.net
My 400M is in parts on my garage floor. I have the edelbrock 600 carb and 400 performer manifold. I plan on an rv cam, edelbrock or comp cams. Do I need more compression for a 'pulling' engine than stock, 8.0 or 8.4, depending on what I read? Can I just lap my valves in real well or is the 3 angles valve job a must have? I am on a tight budget for this. Thanks
The edelbrock performer 400 intake is a dual plane intake. The difference between the performer, and the performer RPM is that the Performer RPM is a high-rise style intake. It is designed for better fuel atomization at higher RPMS. Your 400 will never see more than 4,500 rpms, (even thats pushing it). The Performer 400 is built to build torque from idle to 5500rpms. More than sufficient for any 400M build up. Good luck with the project!
