Hello. I just bought a 2000 Expy EB 4WD about a month ago. I am planning to buy new tires and need some opinions. I mainly use it for a daily driver. No off-road use. I will customized it later on but for the time being just tires. Mainly used for family trips. Which tire would be best LT or P tires?
I think the LT tires are worth getting. The ride will be a little rougher but even if you don't need the extra weight-carrying capacity, the LTs will be much harder to puncture. I have D-rated LT tires and in 70,000 miles have never needed to plug a hole.
As a daily driver, with no towing or heavy loads, the P-metric tires would work. That is what these trucks came with originally. Sounds like you may swap them out down the road, so maybe buying the best isn't a huge issue right now.
I don't think you will gain any puncture resistance from an LT tire but generally what you do gain is the ability to carry more wieght. The LT tires often are designed to allow the use of higher pressures. This allows more load capacity and generally better fuel economy at the expense of ride quality. You will also notice, if you peruse the stats, that LT tires generally come with deeper tread than P-metric tires. Something to consider if long life is a goal.
I personally have D rated LT tires on mine, but I am running a much more agressive tire than you are asking about.
You could go either way depending on your needs for the tires.
If you aren't hauling or towing, p-metric is fine for you.
I was in a similar situation to yours just a couple months ago and picked up a set of Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmours. They rated very highly everywhere I looked. So far I'm loving the tires.
