I have 98 sport 4 ltr 5 speed standard. I rock cut a tire, 255 70 16, and can't match the other 3 as they're no longer in production. I have two near new BFG AT, 245 75 16 off my old pickup. They appear to be close to the same size, can I run them on the back and the Firestones on the front?
This is my hunting buggy, so used mainly off road.
If not will the brown wire mod solve the problem?
You can probably fiddle with tire pressure to make them have the same loaded radius. I put 245 75 -16s on after 255 70s, they were a bit taller. Dunlop vs. Goodyear, ymmv.
The "general" rule is/was not to have the rear tires turning faster than the fronts. That means slippage. Newer automatic 4wd systems might be smarter than that, but your vehicle is made to engage the fronts only when the rears slip, right? (as was my '98) It is not an AWD, right?
I just happened to have my window sticker handy for my '98. (yes, I need to tidy things up) '98 says "Control-Trac". "Advanced-Trac" is a later model iirc.
Well I put the 245's on the rear, doesn't seem to be any issues.
I also did the brown wire snip, so I'm mostly running in 2 wheel drive.
I wish I'd have done that long ago!
You've already done it but here's my $00.02 worth -
A 255x70 tyre isn't exactly 255mm wide so it's not going to be exactly 30.06 inches high especially if it's worn so what you've done will most likely be ok particularly with the brown wire mod.
