I have a 07 f250 6.0l King Ranch with 130,000 km/s on her.
When I turn the key and wait for the glow plugs to heat up there is a sick sounding hum. It sounds like a fuel pump to me, but it is my first diesel and thought I would ask you all if this sound is fermilier to any one. The sound is there humm is there always when I turn the key to on, but sometimes it sounds real bad.
u r correct, it is a pump and although most say wait for it to finish,
unless I'm using the remote start which delays for 30 seconds (I think) ,
I'm too impatient and never wait
101K later it still starts and runs fine !
The loudest sound is usually the vacuum pump. There is no need to wait for that to go out. Second loudest is the fuel pump. I cannot hear that one from inside the cab, but my ears are not as good as they once were. No need to wait for that one to go out either. The only thing you really wait for is the glow plug indicator, and a little longer if you feel the need.
the glowplug timer is up to 120 sec so 2 minuts. The light and the timer are not set to go off together. A short duration light is normal. the longer you let it heat up the happer it will be when it lights
I had the same problem using B20 a couple of years ago.
The filters were overdue, the temperature dropped and the fuel became thicker.....noise that grew louder. I changed the filters and it went back to normal. I am not sure if it shortened the life of ether the pump or the injectors.
"It sounded smooth before now sounds like it has a galstone!! LOL...." isnt this the sound of the ficm doing its warming of the injectors? and the change in sound means check the voltage? <!-- / message -->

Probably wouldn't be a bad idea, it only takes a couple minutes to check. At least he can rule that out as a possible problem. Also have batts load tested separately- this means unhooking them from each other. I had mine done at Advance Auto for free, I just unhooked one at a time. They needed to be replaced, so I got 2 (top shelf Titanium or Platinum, can't remember) for around $200, 850CCA 3 yr unlimited warr. Also check alt. Charging system needs to be in good health or it will lead to other more expensive problems.

A few months ago I noticed that my friends 6.0 at work went from making a smooth hum when turning the key on too making a really raspy almost vibrating sound. Sounded like whatever was makes the noise was dieing. For 2 weeks after that the truck truck would occasionally miss really bad and lose power and blow tons of black smoke out the exhaust. So we hooked it up to the computer at work and found a code for the FICM(cant remember the exact number) anyways he replaced the FICM and that solved the problem.
I never thought the FICM could have caused the change in sound but maybe you are right and the OP should check the voltage of their FICM
What is the best computer/code reader for the money(cheep as possible) and thanks for tha replys Guys!! i will look in to it.
What is the FICM and the KOEO? I am new to the big d'z.
I also thought of getting a chip/programer. Any ideas on what is a good one for the cash also?
