"new" chrome trim
I haven't found a way to polish out what's left of the plating. I sanded all of it off until I got down to bare aluminum. With the sanding marks in it it looked like brushed aluminum or stainless and I was tempted to get the sand marks consistent and clear them out that way. But, I wound up sanding them down further (up to 2000 grit wet sand) and polishing them on a grinder with a cloth wheel and buffing compound, followed by some Mothers Mag Polish.
They look pretty good, but I need to re-do the 2000 and polish some more as there are still scratches in them. Then I will clear coat them. I'm going to try and include a pic, but even if I'm successful, it's from a $6 camera, so it won't be great.
This is a pretty labor intensive mod, but LMC sells each side of these for $90 each, and that is just the tip of the iceberg. To replace all the moulding on my truck would cost more than I paid for it, so for me, it's worth it.
