Is there anyone on this board that has a 92-96 F150 4x4 shortbed w/ dual tanks? I've searched everywhere that I can think of & have yet to see one. I know that the front tank will clear the transfer case because I took measurements of off my L & compared them to my 93 4x4. Did Ford not put dual tanks in shortbed 4x4s?
They did. Should be about a 16.5 gallon tank in front and a 19.2 gallon tank behind the axle. That tank is the same on short and long bed trucks. The front tank is larger on the long bed trucks, i think about 19 gallon.
I have not seen any 92-96 trucks that were regular cab short bed 4x4 with dual tanks. They all had just the rear tank. I don't think it was an option for that particular configuration.
It finally quit raining long enough for me to do some measuring on my 93 4x4 sb & my wrecked 95 Lightning. I found out that the reason a front tank isn't on 4x4s from the factory, they won't fit. The transfer case housing where the driveshaft comes out is what prevents installation. The tank would have to be modified on the front to be made to work. It can be done but I would only cut & weld on a new tank & I don't have the funds for that right now.
I've got a '96 short bed 4x4 with dual tanks, but its also an extended cab and I'm guessing you were talking about reg. cabs. Also, both tanks are almost identically the same size, about 16.5 gallon.
I think it has to do with the transmission. This is just a guess and from what I have seen with my own stuff. I have a few 87-91 trucks and have seen this. All are long bed, reg cabs. The ones with a AOD, C6, or a ZF5 had the larger midship tank. However my 91 with a E4OD has the smaller 16 gallon tank. I'm thinking and might be willing to bet that a short bed, 4X4, with a E4OD there just is not the room.
the one that posed here with both tanks what transmissions do you have?
As I said this is a guess but I know the E4OD's are longer then the others so that might be the problem.
The owners manual for my 96 150 has a capacities chart. Every Truck has dual tanks except the standard cab short bed 150 (wheel base of 116.8 inches), it only lists a rear tank, does not even list the front as an option.

I still wonder if its now due to the longer E4OD trans? I know my 91 I can NOT fit the larger 19 Gallon tank in the mid ship place as the transfer is in the way and it has the smaller 16 Gallon .. Its a Reg cab long bed with 4Wheel Drive.
