I have a 96 F-250 with 355 gears in it now. Its is my plowing-wood haulin truck. I would like to put some kind of affordable locker in the rear and possibly switch over the gears to 410s! I run 265s for tires and wont be going any bigger on this truck. Looking for ideas on brands any info would be helpful to make up my mind on what to do! I would even be open to a partime locker in the front since it would be apart for gears!
just to add to the ? The front and rear gears have to match correct ?I was told that a set of 4.10s would work well with my 35" tires and the 302 under the hood Becouse I have found more 4.11s for my dana 44 than a 4.10 gear
for the most part you should match gearsets... that said ford did run 3.55 rears with 3.54 fronts. 4.10s and 35s would work good but your rpms might be a little on the high side on the highway but thats a personal thing.
The truck has a manual trans. if that helps but what ratio would work well with that size of tire . For the future is some kind of formula to calculate for what gear ratio ?
On my 95 HD F250, with manual trans, I am running 35s (315/75/16) and 4.10 gears. It does OK, but in my opinion, it could use a little higher gears. My speedo is off so I can't be exact, but it runs around 1800 -1900 rpm at 55 mph in 5th gear. While on the flat this is fine, but any hills start to bog it down. If I kick it up to 60+ and get the rpms to 2000 or better, it does fine. Thought about dropping back to 33s, but I like he looks of the 35s, so I guess I will live with it for now. Hope this helps.
I have an old 78' f150 w/a 4spd /granny 1st so the higher gear will be best for me I tried the gear calc. but when I punched in some number NaN came up so I'll have to figure out what the gears are and the original tire size . If it where posssible I'd like to take 1st out and install a new 4th gear but I was informed thats not possible .
what about the factory Ford traction lock I know they arent as tough as a detroit locker but they are rebuildable and ten times quieter in operation plus more affordable !
The traction lock isn't that good of a posi... If anything go with a powerlock there stronger and more aggressive... As for a detroit being loud I've had one in the rear of my truck for years and don't hear it.
