Does anyone know where i could purchase a new 400M crate motor or a built 400m complete engine with warranty or will i have to rebuild mine locally? Thanks JMYLEW near Seattle, Wa.
About nine months ago, I was having thoughts of buying a 351W long block. My buddy urged me to talk to a Ford Parts Dept. We talked to the shop foreman at Sound Ford who gave us a price on a "Ford Rebuild", built by a local engine builder to Ford's standards. I think the price quoted was about $1100. There are numerous engine builders around here (I live in the Seattle area myself) but are you taking a chance with the quality? I contemplated haveing my bad 302 rebuilt at my local speed shop's machineist's shop and that run's about $1500 for a shortblock rebuild (including new pistons, boreing .060 over, line boreing, new crank) Another machine shop quoted $1800. Have you seen Fords new crate engine: 392ci. It's a stroked 351W. The pistons used are 302 pistons so that the wristpin isn't in the rings. Those dimensions are not totally unlike your 400. I am not aware that Ford makes any new crate 400's.
Amazingly enough carparts.com has reman short and long blocks. Shortblock was $5-600, long was less than $1K. One thing I will recommend is that you don't get a Jasper engine. My truck has one (PO installed, its a 400) and it smokes like a pig, burns oil 1 qt every 100 miles. From other people I have talked too (or read about on the internet) this is acceptable oil consumption, according to Jasper, for a rebuilt engine. It does run good though, and other than smoking it runs great. I can only imagine the power I'm losing, though, due to blow-by.

Checker/Shucks/Kragen has a nice line of 'crate' engines. I used to work for them, they have a line of 'performance' engines. They feature cranks that have no more than .010" ground, new cams, mostly everything is new except for the rods. The blocks are also painted factory colors. No more than .040" over on the blocks also.
it comes with a standard 12 month/12,000 warranty
NAPA, and most of the other parts stores also have rebuilt engines.
