I'm not sure about our pickups but on semis and trailers when you install them you stretch the threads and are not suppose to reuse them.
thats the reason why! i remember this now.right!
and that's why they turn off so hard and appear to be cross threaded.
(it's likely a few good loads in our case, rather than the 100ft install.so i guess one could safely reuse them, within a few weeks, and if they didn't start hauling yet.other than that, yeah.time for new ones.)
Never reuse old axle u-bolts. The fine thread does stretch and distorts so you can never get them retighened properly. It is the same as useing a double nut lock system it destroys the threads. You wouldn't believe the stuff I see when I strip down a 100 year old bell. We have to take them apart the hard way as torcheing the stuff might heat up the bronze and cause the bell to crack. The top nut comes off rather easey but the lower one can take a pipe wrench and a 8' cheater pipe and that is if I am luckey, sometimes it has to be done with a hammer and chisel.
I went to a suspension shop this morning and bought new u-bolts, nuts and washers for the front end. The stock ones were coarse threaded and the new ones are fine threaded. The new ones are more substantial. The install went smoothly after I scrubbed off all of the power steering fluid which has been leaking for who knows how long.
