Fuel pump question

I have a '97 350 with 156k and i'm in the process of replacing the 2 fuel llines that come up the front of the engine. I have the fuel filter housing and the lines out and I was wondering if I should just replace the fuel pump while I am at it. It doesn't appear to be leaking but I wasn't sure if I should just do it while the filter housing is out. I also noticed that there was an electrical connection on the drivers side of the filter housing under the regulator that seemed to be all fried, it wasn't the bottom connection, but the one under that. I was thinking maybe it is the connection for the heater element? I appreciate all your help and input.

If the fuel pump is not broken, don't fix it. You don't have to removed the filter housing to replace a fuel pump later.

The wire - 2nd from the bottom is the fuel bowl heater element. You can disconnect it. It is not needed if you are running good winterized diesel. If it shorts out it is on the same fuse as you PCM and Glow Plugs and the truck will not run. Fuse 22 in the main fuse box under the hood. The bottom wire is for the water in fuel sensor.

Red, with that many miles and if the pump has never been replaced it would be really easy to do it now. Also the connection you are talking about probably is the heater wire. Is it the middle connection on the drivers side? If so you should just tape it up unless you fixed the heater element.

That's why I said if it has never been replaced. I had to do mine at around 152K and it was a PIA to work around the fuel canister.

Thanks for all the input guys. I thought it might be the fuel heater element. If I want to fix that could i get the wire end too because the it's all melted off, and what's the best place to get all the fuel hoses and o-rings for the fuel pressure regulator? Should I go to the stealership or check out online stores? Thanks again.

Red, here is a good write up on some of your questions. On the melted wire I believe it is just a spade connection, like a speaker wire so you probably could fab one up yourself.
